Rana Abdelhamid’s Hijabis of New York set to break stereotypes

After human of New York, comes hijabis of New York by Rana Abdelhamid in an effort to highlight hijabi women in their true character against the assumed misconceptions. After a friend told her she’s pretty normal to be a hijab clad woman, it struck her, how misconstrued the image of Muslim women who wear a hijab is. They are automatically assumed to be polite, docile, submissive and not career oriented. That’s when 22 year old Abdelhamid started the Hijabis of New York Facebook page, which publishes photographs of hijab-wearing women profiled in the style of Humans of New York. Abdelhamid adds that while the page focuses on hijabs specifically but also wants the world to discover other facets of these hijab wearing women who really aren’t different. Some she says can be pretty badass!

Through this endeavour she aims to take the focus off the muslin garb and aim at more important challenges such as domestic violence, assault, harrassment–facing Muslim women. Hopefully, this page will be able to shed a light on real life struggles
