Case in point is Tokyo’s latest fitness trend; the women are getting in shape and beating stress in a very unusual way called Katana Exercise. Setagaya, Tokyo, is home to one such class that involves the use of swords to get rid of stress and slices the fat away (pun intended). It’s supposedly a high intensity routine wherein Japanese women enjoy swinging Japanese swords around to the beat of heavy Japanese rock music. This is a motley of some rigorous hand movements, dance and toning exercises. The benefits are many, as Katana exercises helps target women’s problem areas like hips, butts and upper arms. Takafuji, who runs these classes came up with the idea almost 7 years ago and is also a physiotherapist. He ran with the idea and now has over 100 students attending his classes in Tokyo.

Takafuji maintains that, over the period of a three-month course, participants can lose up to four kilograms (8.8 pounds) and five percent of their body fat. Plus for those who hate going to a gym or simply dancing in front of a mirror this could be your thing. Feel like a real life fruit ninja for 8,000 yen (US$64), which is the asking price for 3 classes.
